From Crisis to Confidence: Rebuilding Life Through Housing & Support
Client H. came to License to Freedom’s office in tears, experiencing domestic violence and facing the threat of imminent homelessness. In distress, she shared, “I’m going to become homeless soon, I need a house.” She was quickly connected with both a Domestic Violence Advocate and a Housing Navigator for immediate support.
The Housing Navigator began working with Client H. right away. She shared that her husband was withholding financial support and that she lacked access to basic necessities like food. The navigator consulted with the Executive Director, who approved emergency support. The Community Health Worker (CHW) was then asked to provide groceries and produce to help meet Client H.’s immediate needs.
To help stabilize her situation, the navigator also assisted Client H. with applying for food stamps. Within a few weeks, she received her EBT card, an important step toward food security. Client H. was extremely grateful and expressed how supported she felt by the Housing Navigator.
Meanwhile, the DV Advocate helped connect Client H. to a job opportunity. The Housing Navigator assisted with the job application, and Client H. was successfully hired, marking a major step toward financial independence.
The Housing Navigator had been assisting the member in applying to several affordable housing options each week. One day, S.S. informed the navigator about an apartment she saw with a “For Rent” sign. The navigator immediately accompanied her to view the unit, and Client H. was very happy with it. The navigator supported her throughout the application process, and once she was approved, communicated directly with the landlord to explain the housing program and coordinate next steps. A lease agreement was secured, and the landlord kindly agreed to allow Client H. to move in while awaiting the processing of the security deposit and first month’s rent.
Now, Client H. is rebuilding her life with strength and resilience. She has become an independent woman, working, housed, and stable. The Housing Navigator continues to support her through the tenancy, including helping her send rent payments via Zelle and manage her utility and internet bills.
Through compassionate, coordinated efforts, License to Freedom and the Housing Navigator have helped Client H.. move from crisis to confidence, empowering her to begin a new chapter with hope and independence.
