Economic Development

From Vision to Venture

Building Successful Small Businesses Together

License to Freedom’s Economic Development Program empowers refugee and immigrant entrepreneurs with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to establish and grow successful small businesses. By blending technical assistance, hands-on training, and community engagement, the program creates pathways toward financial stability, cultural visibility, and long-term economic independence.

Entrepreneur Training & Technical Assistance

The cornerstone of the program is an 8-week training course led by two experienced Business Coaches who are fluent in the languages and cultural contexts of participants. The training covers:

  • Business registration and forming LLCs
  • Developing business plans and pricing strategies
  • Sourcing suppliers and managing inventory
  • Marketing and branding, including social media promotion
  • Accounting basics and financial literacy
  • Customer service and community engagement

Following the training, participants receive ongoing one-on-one technical assistance, ensuring they can apply their new knowledge directly to their businesses and overcome barriers as they arise.

Community Bazaars

To provide practical experience and visibility, the program organizes monthly community bazaars. These events allow refugee entrepreneurs to:

  • Sell their products directly to the public
  • Test pricing, packaging, and marketing strategies
  • Build a loyal customer base within the San Diego community
  • Share their heritage and traditions through food, crafts, art, and services

These bazaars not only generate income but also foster cross-cultural connections and mutual understanding between newcomers and long-time residents.

Long-Term Impact

By combining education, mentorship, and practical opportunities, the Economic Development Program helps refugee entrepreneurs:

  • Transition from informal to formal business ownership
  • Increase household income and economic self-sufficiency
  • Contribute to local economic growth
  • Build generational wealth and create jobs in their communities
Craft & Community

United We Sew

United We Sew is a new program that allows women to get paid fairly while making products they love. Their hand-made products are sold through License to Freedom’s retail store.

Our program creates opportunities for women in San Diego to sew together with women from License to Freedom to create opportunities to build friendships among women from diverse backgrounds.
