A Library Visit That Sparked New Passions and Confidence

We organized a trip to the El Cajon Library to introduce refugee youths to the wide range of resources and activities available in their community. Many of the youth had not realized the library offered so much more than books. During the visit, some of them discovered the weekly chess sessions and became very interested. They decided to start attending the sessions regularly, and soon they were fully engaged, practicing their skills, meeting new people, and building confidence.

A few even joined the library’s chess tournament, an experience that gave them pride and excitement as they were able to take part in something new. What started as a simple field trip turned into an opportunity for participants to gain a hobby, strengthen their critical thinking, and connect with their community in a meaningful way.
